I have been a biomedical scientist for around 18 years and in this time seen many structural and technological changes within Pathology. My specialist discipline is Clinical Chemistry but around 8 years ago I became interested in POCT whilst working as a senior BMS at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. I could see that there was an interest in providing rapid testing facilities at the bedside. I became the POCT Co-Ordinator around 5 years ago and set about developing a team who would be dedicated to governing POCT within the acute trust and external sites where they were interested. During this time my team has developed a CPA accredited service which operates within the trust and also the community. The challenge for the future is how to maintain safety and quality in this growth area of Pathology.
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is among the first sites in the UK to achieve Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) for Point of Care Testing (POCT). The accreditation covers both connected and non-connected elements of the POCT service at the main Derriford Hospital site in Plymouth and, for the first time, it also includes community hospitals, hospital clinics and external clinics served by the Trust.
CPA for POCT is an important indicator of quality, as Tony Cambridge, Section Lead for POCT and EQA at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, explains. “The POCT service should provide the same quality of service as the clinical laboratory,” he says. “CPA is regarded as the benchmark for quality, giving user’s confidence in the service they are procuring. It also ensures that patient safety is optimised.”
