As well as a wealth of professional experience in Rheumatology she also has personal experience having lived with Rheumatoid Arthritis for 25 years.

It is her joint experiences as a healthcare professional and a patient that has driven her enthusiasm for patient centred care, self-management and shared decision making. Living with a long term condition herself Alison feels it is vital to be fully involved in ones own care as much as possible, to ensure self management, concordance with care and improved long term health outcomes.

With the huge developments in Rheumatolgical care  and an explosion of new therapy choices, Alison feels there has never been a more important time for shared- decision making to play an integral part in patient care, but feels the ‘how’ to do it when faced with a number of barriers remains a problem.
